Hey…

I want you to know that I am proud of you today. I am so proud of you, because no matter where you are on your recovery journey, you’re here reading this, and that says something.  Even if you feel like that journey hasn’t even begun yet… you’re here, and I believe in you and I am proud of you.

There.

Doesn’t that feel great?

I think we all forget the importance of being verbally affirmed in our recovery.  At the beginning of our journey, sometimes the affirmations flow from our accountability partners and the people around us, just because they notice such major positive changes… but what about after those positive changes become your way of life and the constant praise stops?

I’m not saying that it’s necessary to have a cheerleader standing by your side at all times… but whether you stopped using drugs last week or 6 years ago… you still need someone to tell you what a good job you’re doing from time to time.

This really hit home for me yesterday. I was talking to my best friend and accountability partner, Laura, [you guys would love her,] and out of the blue, she told me how proud of me she was and how much she admired me and how she was my biggest fan… and honestly, it was the best feeling in the world, and it was just the boost I needed to keep going on this very, very long path to wholeness.

It doesn’t hurt to take a second to let your support team know that you still need to hear positive affirmations. I know it might seem silly or self centered to ask, but it’s not… it’s encouraging, you ARE doing a great job and you NEED to hear it.

And hey! Take a minute to tell your accountability partner THANK YOU. Because honestly, where would we be without them? I can't imagine where I would be without Laura's constant support in my life and my recovery... from the time she threw me a "Happy 100 Days of Not Pulling Out Your Hair" party in 2006 until this very moment, she has been by my side, making sure I don't slide and cheering me on. I’ve attached a picture of Laura and I, and I would love you hear how your accountability partner has been instrumental in your life in the comments below!
