i Want i Need
I just wanted to take some time to introduce it to all of you officially, and let you know what's going on around here.
A few weeks ago we started focusing more specifically on addictions here at HeartSupport and we wanted to start a conversation about wants vs. needs.
Anyone who has ever been addicted to something knows that the road to addiction comes when something that you want and enjoy turns into something that you need and can't live without.
There are healthy needs in your life [water, air, shelter, etc.] but then there are wants that can take over and feel like needs.
In my own life, I would say that for a good long time, I thought that I needed Starbucks every day. Let's be honest, no one needs to consume over-priced coffee beverages every day, but I had myself worked up to such a point where I would get headaches and anxiety if I didn't get my corporate caffeine fix. It wasn't until one of my friends helped point it out to me that I realized... I don't need Starbucks, I just want it. I wanted Starbucks so badly that I convinced myself that I needed it to feel justified. It sounds silly, but it's true.
I think that awareness is the first step.
So here is my challenge for you today... write down a list of everything in your life that you feel like you cannot live without, it doesn't matter how big or how small, just be brutally honest with yourself. After you have made the list, ask a close and trusted friend to go through your list with you and help you to decided what things are really needs, and what things are actually wants.
If you feel like you want to post it here, please feel free, we'd love to start the conversation with you or if you would like to talk with someone from HeartSupport about discerning wants from needs in your life, please e-mail info@heartsupport.com.
