I had the chance to chat with Joe "H", director of operations at Sex Addicts Anonymous , and he had some incredible things to say about using SAA as a resource, as well as getting started on your recovery journey, you can check out the interview below!

1. What are the tangible first steps that someone who is struggling

with sex addiction can take?

If an individual is struggling with unwanted sexual behaviors and wants to

know if they may have a sex addition, we have a self-assessment questionaire

that can be accessed by calling our toll free number at 1-800-477-8191 and

selecting the option to listen to the questions or they can go to our

website and access our basic pamphlet which describes our problem and has

the self-assessment questions.

If they determine they might be a sex addict, they may want to begin

attending our meetings which can be located on our website.  If there are

no local meetings they can participate in one of our phone meetings which

are held daily.  It is suggested they attend six meetings before deciding

if our program is right for them.

2. When someone who is struggling with sex addiction visits your site,

what can they get, what can they take away?

There is a tremendous amount of information on our website about sex

addiction and our program.  Our program follows a 12 step program which

can be found on our website, in addition, the fellowship's view on

sobriety and how sponsorship works can also be found.  They can also

access our newsletters, which contains personal stories of recovery of our

members.

3. What can someone who attends a Sex Addicts Anonymous meeting expect?

First and most important they can expect acceptance no matter what they

have done in the past.  We also do not discriminate based on sexual

preference.  Anyone who has a desire to stop their harmful sexual

practices are welcome in our meetings.  There are many meeting types, some

share around a topic, others work though the 12 steps of SAA and others

may have a speaker.  Most of all those members who have worked the twelve

steps of SAA and have maintained sobriety, share their experience,

strength and hope.  The meetings are a safe place to share those things in

your life you swore you would never tell anyone about.  It about letting

go of the shame and finding new tools to help start you on the road to

recovery.  It is a very spiritual environment but newcomers seldom feel

this in the beginning as they are buried in their pain and shame.  There

is no requirement to share doing a meeting but those who continue to come

to meetings eventually feel safe and begin to share.

4. Do you have any stories of those who have benefitted from and found

hope and healing using the Sex Addicts Anonymous program?

We have many stories of hope and healing in our newsletters, which can be

found on our website.  Our basic text, which we use for working the 12

steps of SAA also has stories of recovery.  The basic text can be found on

our website under our store along with many other basic pamphlets on our

program.  I personally have seen hundreds of men walk into their first

meeting, broken and in pain.  Over they years many of these men become

healed as they work though recovery.  By changing their lives, which means

living with honesty and integrity, they become better husbands, wives,

fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and friends.  They begin to change the

world around them by changing themselves.  It is truly a miracle.

I hope this helps you.  Thanks for creating a pathway for recovery for the

many addictions our society faces.
