Experts estimate the incidence of habitual self-injurers is nearly 4 % of the population, with an almost equal number of males and females, although more females present for treatment.
About 17 percent of college students, 20% of women and 14% of men, report that they have cut, burned, carved or harmed themselves in other ways. However, fewer than 7% of the students studied had ever sought medical help for their self-inflicted physical injuries.
Recent studies of high school and college students put the number at approximately one in five.
