“evermind” by idle threat Song Meaning: Grieving Young Lives Lost

The song “evermind” by idle threat invites listeners into a particularly heavy topic — and an opportunity for connection through lament, proving that there is no human experience that we have to face alone.

What does the title “evermind” mean?

The word “evermind” comes from a source many alternative bands have drawn inspiration from: the work of author J.R.R. Tolkien.

“It’s safe to say that idle threat was formed by some full-fledged nerds, and, when it was suggested that we name this song after simbelmynë, I was undeniably thrilled,” explains drummer Justin Jones, referencing a flower that grows on burial mounds in one of the mythical kingdoms in Lord of the Rings. “This particular plant, albeit fictional, symbolizes remembrance and beauty amidst the grief of losing a loved one. Specifically, we wanted to expound on the painstaking confusion of losing a young one.”

What events inspired the writing of “evermind?”

idle threat was inspired to write “evermind” after the terrible tragedy of The Covenant School shooting in Nashville in 2023. The event was particularly near for the band, as drummer Justin Jones actually knew one of the victims.

“The words and music of ‘evermind’ take a concept so gut wrenching and awful but give (almost) four minutes of space to exercise the range of emotions of losing someone far too young,” Jones explains.

That makes the pleas of the song deeply, personally poignant.

"Oh, God, will you weep with me?"

The feeling of personal grief over this public tragedy was intensified by the fact that around this same timeframe, vocalist Ernie Fabian became a father. This made the idea of childhood cut short excruciating.

At the same time, it gave the band life to celebrate. Other members were navigating marriage, graduate school, and major personal shifts. “evermind” would land on the album you’ll forget the sun, their upcoming album which crystallizes that season of life growth and change.

“I have worked with thousands of children at this point in education and counseling, and Ernie’s son is one of the cutest kiddos I have ever had the pleasure of meeting,” Justin shares. “Watching Ernie raise his son has been so heartwarming, and it's a wonderful reminder that life can be so hopeful, colorful, and sweet. We focus a lot on the concept of light in our new record, and, in my humble opinion, there aren't many things that shine brighter than the contagious joy of children. Readers, I hope that you are investing in the youth in your life, as it's imperative and life-giving.”

What is the meaning of the song “evermind?”

The song itself addresses both life’s impermanence and the power of communal lament.

Justin says frankly, “The great equalizer and common denominator of humanity is death. Mourning and coping are part of the human experience, and, unfortunately, these can be done in a way that is detrimental to health. However, it is important to note that everyone experiences forms of this together and that no one is truly alone in it. The weight of any hardship can feel debilitating, but no man is an island (thank you, John Donne).”

The entire album is intended to reference the reality of suffering, and the band’s deeply-held belief that one day, as Justin puts it, “the warmth of the sun will pale in comparison to the presence of God.”

“There is much to be said here and now regarding mental health and cumbersome grief,” Justin continues. “‘evermind,’ as I mentioned earlier, deals with excruciating loss, and we move through it together as the song rolls on. Some of my favorite lines that provide a setting include:

"The light came pouring in through the bedroom window that you used to stare out..."

"I felt your absence surround me"

"Here in your wake now, I have no words to say..."

He says, “I'm sure that many of you, dear readers, are now reminiscing on someone you have lost — God forbid, a child of your own. The song builds and ‘lifts up laments’ only to climax with, again: ‘Oh, God, will you weep with me?’”

“I believe that we have accomplished something special by inviting the listener in to share this grief; arguably the most important thing about music is community, and idle threat just wants to connect with others,” Justin explains. “We want to meet you where you are, as we approach you with who we are.”

idle threat’s focus on mental health

“Collectively, the five of us really just need you all to know that you are loved more than you can ever imagine,” Justin Jones offers. “Every single person has a purpose and place in this world. We love you, open our arms to you, and share our beliefs and experiences with anyone who will listen. There is indeed light even in the darkest of times and spaces.”

Beyond that, idle threat has been a friend to HeartSupport’s community-focused mental health support for years. Justin himself has written a feature for HeartSupport in the past.

“Really, I'm just grateful for being invited back and having another opportunity to offer comfort,” Justin concludes on a personal note. “Transparency is both my greatest strength and weakness, and I aim to be as open and accessible about my own struggles as possible. idle threat is one of many outlets in my life that allows me to connect with others and have meaningful conversations; I whole-heartedly believe that sharing our successes and failures together is the catalyst for prosperity.”

Speaking on behalf of both himself and idle threat, Justin says: “We thrive when we learn and grow together, and each and every one of you hold immeasurable value and deserve to be happy and healthy. Please take your mental health seriously, and grow your garden.”
